We’ve all been there—curled up in bed thinking, “how in the world will I be able to go outside for a run in the freezing cold today?” Just the thought of pulling back the covers and stepping out of bed fills you with dread like no other. Instead, you find it easier to just roll back over and tell yourself you’ll start tomorrow.
Thankfully, there are several other ways to get your body moving without facing the cold, or even leaving your own home. If you find yourself struggling to get in some exercise during the winter, then here are five ways, suitable for all levels, to get started!
Do Some Yoga
Although yoga may not seem like a workout compared to some other options, it definitely builds up a sweat. It can be just what your body needs to warm up on a cold day. The great thing about yoga is that is requires very little space and can be done almost anywhere. There are lots of YouTube videos out there that guide you through different flows, but I would recommend Yoga with Tim.
Reserve a Spot at the Gym
For all of my fellow Drake students out there, the Bell Center is officially open! If you’re anything like me, you’ve been itching to work out at the gym again and get back into your routine. The Bell Center allows students to reserve a spot online for any of their exercise machines or studio spaces. To reserve a spot, follow the steps here!
Take a Class
If going to the gym isn’t really your thing or you’re trying to stay safe during the pandemic, Drake Recreational Services also offers On Demand GroupX classes. All you have to do is download the Drake Rec App with your Drake email address and find the classes under “On Demand.” The best part is you can take these classes wherever you’d like, so you don’t even have to leave your home!
Climb With a Friend
Another great way to get active without braving the cold is climbing at Climb Iowa. Not only is this a phenomenal workout, it is also a fun activity to do with a friend! Following the CDC Guidelines and implementing mask and social distancing requirements, Climb Iowa is also a safe activity to participate in this winter.
Go for a Hike
Okay, hear me out. I know we are trying to avoid the cold here, but if bundled up appropriately, you will barely even feel cold. My roommate, who is a frequent hiker adds, “There are tons of trails around Des Moines, like Greenwood and Ashworth Park, and the nice thing is that the trails are all connected. Also, being surrounded by nature and a different setting other than your own block can make the cold seem less unbearable. If you pick a nice, sunny day, a hike can be the perfect workout.”
And just think about the hot chocolate you can make after!
