Access to abortion care has been an evolving issue in Iowa, with legal and political changes influencing the availability of services. However, as of now, there are still options for those in need of care.

Iowa’s recent 6-week near total abortion ban, which was put into effect on July 29th 2024, resulted in the consolidation of abortion services by Planned Parenthood in Ames Iowa, about 20-30 minutes outside of Des Moines.
In addition to scarce abortion care options available to Iowans, as of recent years, Iowa has seen changes in abortion laws. Iowa has enacted waiting periods, mandatory counseling, and parental notification requirements for minors. Individuals seeking an abortion must wait 24 hours after their initial consultation before the procedure can take place. All of which are measures taken to create barriers when accessing abortion care.
It’s important to remember that abortion is still legal in the state of Iowa. Medication Abortions can still be provided before electrical cardiac activity is detected (which is not a heartbeat), which is usually between 6-8 weeks of pregnancy, before most people even know that they are pregnant. Hope is not lost if someone happens to discover that they are pregnant early in their pregnancy, but hope is also not lost when they discover that they are pregnant after the 6-8 week cutoff.

The Iowa Abortion Access Fund is an organization that assists people traveling outside of Iowa for abortion care. Whether people need a plane ticket, a car rental, a hotel, or childcare, the Iowa Abortion Access Fund is there to assist pregnant people in Des Moines and all throughout Iowa.
