Power Life Yoga: The Place to Practice in Des Moines

Power Life Yoga is a locally-based yoga studio in central Iowa with four different locations around the metro in West Glen, Waukee, Johnston, and downtown on Ingersoll.

Yoga has reached an all time high in popularity in the U.S., according to Yoga Journal, the number of Americans doing yoga has increased by over 50% in the last five years. Even Des Moines in its small size has had yoga studios pop up around the metro and Power Life Yoga is one of the most popular and well-known studios to go to.

Des Moines Experience

I have been a member of the Power Life community for over a year and a half now and associate the studio with a mix of young professionals, families, college students, and active Iowans who make up a community of Des Moines “yogis” as our teachers refer to us as.

The studio offers a wide array of classes ranging from the more traditional Power 1 and Power 2 classes to Power Sculpt, a yoga class that incorporates weights and cardio in the flow. All of these classes offer a unique workout that is never the same, with classes ranging from 30 minutes to 75 minutes, the average class lasting 60 minutes.

History of Power Life

Power Life was started by Steph and Adam Geneser, who moved from Denver to Des Moines after a family tragedy. The couple met Vince Nola and Kirk Lautensleger, who both shared a passion for yoga and the four started Power Life Yoga in 2012 with their first studio in West Des Moines.

Owner Adam Geneser shared his inspiration for Power Life and its focus for the now and the future. “Power Life Yoga prides itself in their Midwestern values: hard work, discipline, and focus on community and relationships. By focusing on these values, Power Life has created a community that positively impacts the lives of their students both on and off the mat.  The minute a student walks through the door they are seen, appreciated and welcomed that very moment.”

What you’ll need:

  • A yoga mat: I recommend Lulu Lemon mats, they’re worth the hype. I’ve had mine for three years and it has lasted without much of a scratch. If you’re new to yoga and not totally sold on the idea, Power Life has rental mats to use during your first week.
  • Leggings or shorts and a light shirt or tank top: It does get quite hot in the majority of these classes and you will want clothes that are easy to move around and stretch in.
  • A water bottle: To keep you going when class gets challenging and hot, Power Life also has disposable water bottles available for purchase if you forget one.
  • An open mind and fun attitude: Yoga emphasizes being present in class, do so and have fun with it. Don’t worry about perfecting a pose right away or not knowing what to do, the other yogis are concentrating on their own poses and not you.
